Anesthesiology and life-threatening nursing ERASMUS>PIE17
The course familiarizes students with the specifics of management in life-threatening conditions. It provides theoretical knowledge and develops skills of nursing a patient in a life-threatening state and during anesthesia. It prepares the student to take care of a patient treated in the intensive care unit and to undertake the skills of performing rescue and nursing actions and procedures, taking into account the specificity and sequence of the procedure. Familiarizes with the tasks of a nurse during general and regional anesthesia, specifics of direct postoperative care. It teaches how to use monitoring apparatus and interpret its records, rules and methods of perioperative pharmacotherapy and in the ICU. Develops attitudes of empathy, responsibility and conscientiousness during the professional roles of a nurse.
Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE – A STUDENT KNOWS AND UNDERSTANDS:
1. principles of diagnosing and planning patient care in internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, geriatrics, neurology, psychiatry, intensive care, palliative care, long-term care nursing,
2. types of diagnostic tests and rules of their ordering,
3. principles of preparing patients of different age and health status for examinations and diagnostic procedures, as well as principles of care during and after these examinations and procedures,
4. properties of drug groups and their effects on patient's systems and organs in various diseases depending on age and health condition, including adverse effects, interactions with other drugs and routes of administration,
5. standards and procedures for emergency and life-saving procedures,
6. principles of patient observation after surgery, including basic and extended monitoring,
7. methods of anaesthesia and principles of post-anaesthesia care,
8. pathophysiology and clinical symptoms of life-threatening diseases (respiratory failure, circulatory failure, nervous system failure, shock, sepsis),
9. methods and scales for assessing pain, the level of sedation and sleep disorders and delirious states in patients in life-threatening conditions,
10. methods and techniques of communicating with a patient unable to establish and maintain effective communication due to health condition or treatment applied,
11. principles of prevention of complications associated with the use of invasive diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in critically ill patients
SKILLS – A STUDENT IS ABLE TO:
1. recognize complications after specialist diagnostic tests and surgical procedures,
2. administer oxygen to a patient on an ad hoc basis and monitor his/her condition during oxygen therapy,
3. perform electrocardiographic examination and recognize life-threatening disorders,
4. document patient's health situation, the dynamics of its changes and the realized nursing care, taking into account IT tools for data collection,
5. assist a physician during diagnostic examinations,
6. assess pain level, patient's reaction to pain and its intensity and apply pharmacological and non-pharmacological analgesic procedures,
7. provide first aid in cases of immediate threat to life.
SOCIAL SKILLS – A STUDENT IS READY TO:
1. be guided by the best interests of the patient, respect the dignity and autonomy of those entrusted to their care, show understanding for differences in worldview and culture, and show empathy in relationships with patients and their families,
2. recognize and recognize their own limitations in terms of knowledge, skills and social competences, and make self-assessments of deficits and educational needs.
