SUBJECT LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing the course and confirming the achievement of the assumed learning outcomes, the student:
- Knows the physicochemical properties of elements and chemical compounds used in cosmetology.
- Knows the physicochemical properties, uses, and requirements for water in the cosmetic industry and cosmetology.
- Characterizes selected active ingredients of cosmetic preparations in terms of structure and function.
- Knows the basic groups of cosmetic ingredients, states their functions, and has basic knowledge of their analytics.
- Performs chemical calculations, particularly those related to the determination of composition and preparation of cosmetic preparations. Writes down equations of chemical reactions of cosmetological importance.
- Conducts an analysis of the composition of cosmetic preparations in accordance with INCI principles.
- Demonstrates interest in improving skills and expanding knowledge in the field of cosmetic chemistry.
- Knows the rules of occupational health and safety and the basic equipment of a chemical laboratory.
- Has the ability to perform basic laboratory and analytical activities.
- Performs calculations related to the undertaken laboratory and analytical activities.
- Is ready to cooperate in task groups and confront conclusions arising from the tasks performed to establish a common position for the team.
PROGRAM CONTENT RELATED TO LEARNING OUTCOMES (including self-study)
Lecture:
1. Inorganic elements and compounds in cosmetology (oxides, hydrides, hydroxides, acids, salts). Importance of water quality – methods of purification and treatment; thermal waters.
2. Characteristics of raw materials and cosmetic ingredients: preservatives, disinfectants, radioprotectants, antioxidants, nourishing, astringent and exfoliating, moisturizing, soothing and calming substances, etc. Surfactants – structure, division, and characteristics. Emulsions and emulsifiers.
3. Oxidation-reduction and complexation reactions and their importance in cosmetology.
4. Selected methods and analytical techniques of cosmetological importance.
Laboratory:
1. Organization of work in the laboratory, laboratory regulations and health and safety rules, hazard pictograms, safety data sheets, basic laboratory equipment.
2. Measurement of liquid volume, weighing, preparation of solutions with a specific percentage and molar concentration, dilution and concentration of solutions. Reaction and pH of aqueous solutions, hydrolysis reactions, buffer solutions.
3. Preparation and characteristics of selected cosmetic preparations.
4. Classical quantitative analysis – the use of titration techniques in the determination of selected substances.
Practical Course:
1. Analysis of the composition of cosmetic preparations, principles, and nomenclature of INCI.
2. Dyes and pigments – Colour Index.
3. Surfactants, soaps, emulsions, and emulsifiers.
4. Astringents, anti-hydrotics, and chemical depilators.
