Descriptive statistics ERASMUS>EKO06
Course description:
The course introduces students to the basic principles and techniques of statistical research. It focuses on the structure of mass phenomena, methods of collecting and preparing statistical data, and statistical grouping. The course also covers the interpretation of results and research procedures in the field of economics and finance.
Content:
- Fundamentals of statistical research and mass processes
- Data collection and preparation, statistical grouping
- Statistical series, data presentation methods (tables, graphs)
- Measures of central tendency and dispersion
- Measures of asymmetry and concentration
- Structural analysis in various types of series
- Correlation analysis (Pearson and Spearman coefficients)
- Linear regression model
- Multivariate correlation and regression analysis
- Correlation of qualitative characteristics
- Analysis of dynamics: absolute and relative changes
- Individual and aggregate indices
- Methods of identifying trends and seasonal variation
Goals and objectives:
- To introduce the fundamentals of descriptive statistics
- To develop the ability to analyze and interpret economic and financial data
- To apply statistical procedures in identifying relationships between variables
- To examine dynamic changes and trends in socioeconomic phenomena
- To critically evaluate methods and ensure data precision
Learning outcomes and assessment:
☐ Is able to define and apply statistical concepts and research techniques – written test
☐ Is able to organize and analyze data using statistical methods – skill test, discussion
☐ Is able to interpret measures of structure, correlation, and dynamics – project presentation, test
☐ Is able to apply appropriate statistical procedures to real-life economic data – discussion, lab tasks
☐ Is aware of the strengths and limitations of applied methods – observation, critical thinking tasks
Evaluation criteria of study results:
- Lecture (knowledge tests, activity): 30%
- Laboratory (practical assignments, project, discussion): 70%
Final grade is based on the weighted average of lecture and lab results.
