COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon completing the course and confirming the achievement of the intended learning outcomes, the student:
1. Knows and understands selected issues in the field of the sociology of education; cultural, anthropological, axiological, and sociological descriptions of contemporary society; the functions of education in social life and individual existence—especially in preschool and early childhood education; types and roles of ideologies in social life, with particular emphasis on the role and significance of educational ideologies in shaping early education systems; description, characteristics, specificity, social location, barriers, and developmental opportunities of various social groups; fundamental dilemmas of contemporary education.
2. Has a structured body of knowledge in the field of sociology of education and related disciplines, oriented towards practical application in selected areas of pedagogical activity—especially in childcare, education, supporting child and youth development, and rehabilitation of individuals with dysfunctions; also possesses knowledge of educational and pedagogical experiences in other countries and their selective adaptation in the Polish context.
3. Can reflectively and critically apply theoretical knowledge of contemporary issues in the sociology of education, and correctly formulate written and oral statements related to the subject matter.
4. Is able to analyze core concepts of sociology of education and indicate the specificity of groups in which processes of socialization and education occur.
5. Is ready to undertake professional and personal challenges, as well as individual and team-based professional activities in planning and managing social processes in environments of child and student upbringing and education.
CURRICULUM CONTENT REFERENCED TO LEARNING OUTCOMES
Lecture:
1. Introduction to the sociology of education. Contributions of Polish sociologists of education in the context of the development of sociological theories worldwide. Presentation of sociological theoretical systems related to educational and upbringing issues.
2. Educational institutions in sociological perspective. Institutions of natural and formal education. Characteristics of development and operational mechanisms.
3. Environmental diversity of educational influences. Family, peer group, local community, school, and workplace as educational institutions. Changes in the basic functions of educational institutions resulting from civilizational transformations.
4. Characteristics of education and upbringing institutions in Poland. Family life and formal institutions involved in the upbringing process: function characteristics in the changing social, economic, and civilizational context.
5. Values and norms in the educational process. Conflicts of incompatible value scales in contemporary Polish society. The education system as a social institution mediating the formation of social cohesion under conditions of intensified social status diversification.
