Sociology as a science, deals with the study of the functioning and changes of society, social relations and the culture of everyday life in a cyclical manner. Sociology shows regularities and allows us to understand the mechanisms of functioning of the social world. It allows predicting the direction of social changes, thanks to understanding the principles and rules governing groups, organizations and social institutions. The course aims to introduce students to the basic problems of sociology as a social science. The following issues will be analyzed: sociology as a social science and its internal differentiation. Sociology and other social sciences and humanities. Types and ways of collecting data in sociology, culture as the subject of sociology, socio-cultural change, social interaction, socialization and social control, social group and organization, family as the subject of sociology, nation in sociological perspective, state - politics - democracy, social inequality. The student understands processes characteristic for social life, regularities they manifest in holistic approach (methodological holism).

Learning outcomes
1. knows the basic sociological concepts.
2. indicates the names of the problems of social and economic life in Polish society.
3. knows the cultural, political and economic structures and social institutions on the micro, meso and macro scale.
4. recognises the various levels of relationship between economics and historical, political, social phenomena or processes; a student has the ability to place them on the economic map of the world.
5. is aware of the complexity of processes taking place in the modern global economy; a student is able to: independently assess socio-economic phenomena (also in a historical perspective); formulate his/her own conclusions about these phenomena, conduct substantive discussion; present his/her own views and defend the line of argumentation.
