Aims of the course:
1. Introduction to basic information about the structure of matter, classification of engineering materials.
2. Defects in crystal structure and its effect on mechanical properties.
3. Phase equilibrium systems, iron alloys.
4. Heat and thermo-chemical treatment.
5. Nonferrous metals and their alloys.
6. Ceramic materials, ceramic-metal sintering, polymer plastics.
7. Self-study - preparation for classes (literature studies), preparation of reports, preparation for the lecture test, preparing for the exam.
8. Metallographic studies of cast irons of selected grades.
9. Metallographic study of steels with different carbon contents and after selected types of heat treatment.
10. Metallographic studies of welded and welded steel sheet joints by selected methods.
11. Heat treatment: hardening and tempering.
KNOWLEDGE – A STUDENT KNOWS AND UNDERSTANDS:
1. Has knowledge of materials science issues, can explain basic
the basic concepts of plastics, iron and its alloys as well as non-ferrous metals and their alloys. their alloys.
SKILLS – A STUDENT IS ABLE TO:
1. Is able to select engineering material for structures taking into account special applications.
2. Is able to propose heat and thermo-chemical treatment processes for designed details of machines.
