Aims of the Course:
Systematization and classification of concepts in soil mechanics. Understanding soil properties and the methods of their investigation.
Learning Outcomes:
- Soil classification and determination of basic physical and mechanical properties; factors affecting them
- Strength hypotheses and soil failure mechanisms; groundwater and filtration
- Stress distribution in the soil medium; limit states in soils; slope and structure stability; effects of frost on soil
- Design methodology for retaining structures – including steel sheet piling
- Determination of active and passive earth pressures
- Calculating forces acting on retaining walls
- Slope stability analysis
